Tap On. Ride Easy.

Paying for Transit

PRESTO uses smart-card technology that stores funds in a secure account, replacing the need for tickets, tokens, passes or cash.

When you tap your PRESTO card on a fare payment device, the electronic chip embedded in the card instantly calculates the fare and deducts it from your account. PRESTO devices are located at stations, and on buses and streetcars.

When you tap your PRESTO card on a device, a beep will sound and a green light will flash to indicate the payment has been registered.

If there are insufficient funds in your PRESTO account or if there is a problem with your account, two beeps will sound and a red light will display on the device. If this occurs, please contact us.

Please note, each Transit Agency has different requirements when paying a discounted fare using PRESTO. For specific requirements, please visit the Transit Agency’s website for more information.

Tap the PRESTO payment device each time you board a bus.

Transfers are valid for 2 hours from the time of your first tap. If you board other vehicles within 2 hours your tap counts as a transfer.

Brampton Transit weekly and monthly transit passes are considered final sale and refunds are not offered. For more information, please visit the Brampton Transit site.

GO Transit fares are calculated based on distance travelled. If you don’t have a default set on your card and you forget to tap off at the end of your trip, you’ll be charged to the end of the line at the adult cash fare price (not at the PRESTO discounted rate). This is because the PRESTO system doesn’t know where you travelled to. You also won’t be eligible for additional GO loyalty discounts, transfers to other GO routes or any discounts with connecting transit, so don’t forget to tap off!

There is a 3 hour travel window to complete your GO trip. Transfer credits will be automatically applied when transferring between GO Buses, from GO Buses to GO Trains, or from GO Trains to GO Buses. Transfers between GO Transit and other participating systems must also occur within 3 hours.

Negative balance

We understand that sometimes PRESTO customers don’t have enough funds on their cards to travel to their destination. To help avoid PRESTO customers getting stranded at a location with insufficient funds to travel, we allow registered cardholders to go into a negative balance to pay their fare.

In order to have access to this feature, customers must have a My PRESTO Account, and once the card goes into a negative balance, the cardholder will need to load funds in order to use it for further travel.

For GO customers:

  • If your PRESTO card is set to a default trip, any positive balance on the card will allow you to go into a negative balance
  • If your PRESTO card is not set to a default trip, you must enough funds on the card to pay the fare to the next station on that line/route, to go into a negative balance
    • (e.g. If you are travelling along the Lakeshore West line starting at Union and heading to Hamilton Centre, you will need enough funds loaded on your card to get from Union to the next station on that line, Exhibition, and will go into negative balance for the remainder of the fare to get to your destination, Hamilton Centre)

A fee in the amount of $0.25 will be charged to a customer’s PRESTO card for going into a negative balance the next time the customer loads funds.

Visit the GO Transit website

Transfers are valid for 2 hours from the time of your first tap. If you board other vehicles within 2 hours your tap counts as a transfer.
