Have questions about setting up and managing your fare type? Get the answers to some of our most asked questions.
A fare type is a discounted fare category that can be set on your PRESTO card, allowing eligible customers to take advantage of discounted transit faresIf you pay with a credit or debit card, you cannot set a fare type and will be charged the Adult fare. Fare types include:
- Adult (ages 20–64) - Default fare type
- Child (ages 6 – 12) - Discounted or free fares for children, depending on the transit agency; expires* when the child turns 13.
- Youth (ages 13–19) - Expires* when the card holder turns 20.
- Senior (ages 65+)
- Post-Secondary Student (ages 20–64, full-time students) - Available on participating transit agencies; requires annual renewal.
- Transit Agency—specific fare types - Some municipalities and transit agencies also offer additional Transit Affordability ProgramsContact your local transit agency for more information.
Most discounted fare types require proof of eligibility and must be set up in person at a Customer Service Outlet before the discount can be appliedBe sure to carry proof of eligibility when travelling.
*When a fare type expires, your card’s fare type will automatically change to the Adult fare typeIf you still qualify for a different fare type, you’ll need to set it up to pay a discounted fare.

You can set up or update a fare type on a physical or digital PRESTO cardCredit or debit cards are not eligible for discounted fare types.
Fare types can be set up or updated in-person at:
- A Customer Service Outlet
- A participating Shoppers Drug Mart
- Or through your transit agency (where applicable)
If your fare type is not set correctly, you will be charged the Adult fare.
PRESTO contactless credit and debit cards are always charged the adult fare and cannot have a fare type applied
